What follows is the BBV discussion of what scouts look for in running back prospects. Last year, the Giants fan site, Big Blue View, published a very good series on the topic, What do scouts look for?. He is a smart, high-effort player and among the best in the NFL at his position. Cooper does a good job after the catch of fighting hard and leaning forward for a few extra yards, despite having already made the first down. It depends on whether you favor production or . [9:18] Tate lines up outside this time, fakes an out route, but then redirects to run deep and accelerate quickly while CB Anthony Browns head is turned to the QB, allowing him to get yards of separation and an easy catch that he turns into a TD. Your login session has expired. This is a perfect example of why hands-catching is necessary against NFL-caliber talent, where the few inches of separation created by catching the ball arms length away is the difference between a big catch and an incompletion. He will put that analytical brain to work this off-season helping to analyze some of the top players in the NFC East. He does an excellent job locating and tracking the ball in the air and adjusting his routes to match the balls trajectory (which was important, because he was often so fast that he got underthrown on deep routes). This year, were going to look at the division again, but were gonna try to ramp things up a bit by adding some film review to some of the position group reviews. Fulgham is a huge question mark but we know hes talented. A: NAME: TEAM: COLLEGE: . The 2014 Arizona Cardinals 4th rounder bounced around the league over the past 6 years but seems to have finally settled on his 6th team. Tate freezes safety DJ Swearinger with a subtle fake inside before finally being brought down by HaHa Clinton-Dix, dragging him several yards before going down. This is an example of the trouble Cooper has when facing off against top CBs who are as athletically gifted as he is and arent afraid of getting beat deep. Carolina Panthers. Here are PFF's wide receiver rankings ahead of the 2022 season, starting with Davante Adams and Cooper Kupp at the top. To prepare, we at Chargers Wire are previewing players from every position. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay's time with the Giants is reportedly coming to an end.Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Giants will cut Golladay when the new league year begins on March 15. See where he lands in the Next Gen Stats analytics team's ranking of the top 10 slot receivers right now. Instead, they show the attributes listed below. If there were a vote for the most anonymous group in the division, I suspect that it would be won by the Giants, whose WR corps is headlined by Golden Tate and was not supplemented in the April draft, in which Dave Gettleman selected three offensive linemen and three linebackers, while every other team in the division drafted at least one new receiver. 3. [1:05] Tate lines up in the slot on a crossing route, but sees the play break down as Wentz breaks the pocket and changes directions so quickly that CB Greg Stroman slips on the grass trying to cover him. Then Richardson makes a great leaping catch, highpointing the ball and securing it at maximum extension away from the DB. McLaurin shows good body control, contorting his body around in the air to make the catch despite his momentum. The second-year wideout has been the Lions focal point in high-leverage situations, gaining a first down on 15.2 percent of his routes on third and fourth down this season (third-highest rate, min. To put that in perspective, he is currently the only player in the Next Gen Stats era (since 2016) to average over 3.3 yards per route in a season (min. NFL+ gives you the freedom to watch LIVE out-of-market preseason games, LIVE local and primetime regular season and postseason games on your phone or tablet, the best NFL programming on-demand, and MORE! Once hes caught the ball, this play is over, as McLaurin is too fast for any Eagles defenders to catch him. But the NFC North has four of the very best wideouts in football, including possibly the best wideout in the league in Adams. . Good luck. He will break down film of some of the top receivers in the division: Click here to read the 2019 review of wide receivers which includes Golden Tate, Alshon Jeffrey and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside as well as last years look at Cooper and McLaurin. This time, instead of Mike Hughes, Cooper (top of screen) is facing off against Darius Slay. Giants: Darius Slayton, Kenny Golladay, John Ross III, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney. St. Brown has also provided a safety blanket for Goff when teams blitz (which they often do). Reagor also looks a bit like a running back with the ball in his hands, juking and finding running lanes to get yards after catch. The Dallas Cowboys are the only team that has all the same faces. Oh, and adding CeeDee Lamb to the mix certainly does not hurt. He built on that success his sophomore year in 2018, with 72 receptions for 1,061 yards. Washington Football Team Terry McLaurin has solidified himself as one of the best young receivers in the NFL. He does a good job locating the ball, but realizes hes been a bit underthrown and slows his route down to adjust to the ball and make the catch (another body catch). This is a play that could have benefited from a fake inside before starting the route though, and notice this is again a body catch. Cooper again runs down the sideline and seems to get open by selling the deep route, but breaking it back to shake loose. Alshon Jeffery doesnt have elite quickness, but uses his physicality to get open on short routes like this instead of relying on quickness and change-of-direction ability. This makes fitting the run more difficult for defenses, helping Josh Jacobs run away with the rushing title (so far) this season. Hes not moving to the slot; the ball gets snapped while hes in the process of transitioning, allowing him to catch the ball in the backfield while the other two WRs act as blockers for him. St. Brown has been a revelation for the Lions -- and his impact has played a big role in the teams opportunity to end its five-year playoff drought. 1 receiver out of the gate. Here, the CB decides to take the flag on pass interference rather than risk Jeffery getting loose behind the secondary. Where do Eagles' receivers rank among NFC East. Then Reagor explodes off that planted left leg to go outside and uses a bit of a shove to knock the CB off balance and shoot past him. He looks like he has all the size, speed, acceleration, ball tracking, and sharp cutting ability to be great in the NFL. Slayton has all the athletic traits of a very good WR, but needs a lot of refinement added to his game to allow him to win when athleticism isnt enough. In the off-season, Washington went out and signed speed-threat Curtis Samuel to a three-year, 34,500,000 contract. He does a good job of positioning his body to box out CBs and gives himself the leverage advantage in making plays on the ball. And Waddle -- who was named our most likely first-time Pro Bowler back in November -- has displayed plenty of it this season. The Raiders have faced Cover 6 at an outlier rate this season (17 percent, the only team over 13 percent), as defenses "cloud" Adams' side of the field, drawing a safety farther away from the ball. But the NFC East likely has the next four best players, and has greater depth. Here, well take a look at the top of the depth chart for each team the pool of players from which the ones on the final 53 seem likely to be chosen. NFC East receivers chart. The Best Receiver in the division is either Amari Cooper or Terry McLaurin. In this section, well offer a look at a few of the top players in the division, with an analysis of their styles, skills and limitations written by Andrew York, who has volunteered to help me with this series. It should be extremely worrying when Daniel Jones is the only guaranteed player who will start for their franchise next season. Here, well take a look at the top of the depth chart for each team the pool of players from which the ones on the final 53 seem likely to be chosen. Alshon Jeffery was taken by the Bears in the 2nd round of the 2012 draft. When St. Brown has been missing, Goffs EPA per dropback becomes negative (-0.10). But that couldnt have just been a fluke. Richardson is very much a team player, and will always do his part in a play, even if the ball isnt going his way. Of the players I reviewed last year for the Ranking the NFCE series, my opinion on Cooper is that he is among the least changed. In addition to showing Tates change-of-direction ability yet again, this play shows his improvisational ability and persistence. Richardson is a weak (though willing) run blocker. The Dallas Cowboys rookie taken 17th overall in the 2020 NFL draft looks like a bona fide future star and may emerge as the divisions best weapon sooner rather than later. Who's the Best Wide Receiver in the NFL? To say a wide receiver is a great Route Runner means a lot of different things and there are a wide variety of routes that are run, some of which accentuate different skill sets. This play shows what happens when Slayton is matched up against a CB who is just as fast and quick as he is and allowed to play close. He will break down film from 6 NFC East wide receivers, in order: Amari Cooper was selected 4th overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2015 draft. Once Reagor has passed the CB he shows great acceleration getting down the field quickly and showing good use of inside leverage, keeping himself between the CB and the QB so the QB has a clear path to throw to him inside. Unfortunately, Kupps season was cut short by injury. He has a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics and has spent several years doing research with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, and now does R&D work as a US government contractor. Also, Coopers ability to keep both feet inbounds as he secures a catch right on the edge of the sideline showcases his body positioning and control. You can see Reagors style with the ball in his hands is similar to a RB, with sharp cuts and good vision picking out running lanes to get 19 yards after the catch. From the data above on average 96.1 wide receivers per year played in the NFL between the ages of 25-29. But those wide receivers that have been most successful of late early in their career are the Route Runners. These are guys who are exceptional coming out of their breaks without losing too much speed, have repetitive and repeatable routes time after time so their quarterback knows where they are going to be and can create separation by setting up a cover man and making every route look the same from the beginning. Derek Barnett has a very similar skillset to Brandon Graham. Ron Rivera's culture revolution in Washington has provided the foundation for Logan Thomas to emerge as a respectable pass catcher in this league. Although he managed more than 1000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons, most of those yards seemed to come in about 30% of his games. Overall, he is big, strong, has good hands, and is nuanced at many aspects of playing WR, but shows a lack of deep speed on film. He makes a perfect hands catch, reaching out and securing the ball away from his body (and away from the DB), then tucking it under his outside arm to run. In addition to that, he had a bit of a college injury history, missing several games to injury his sophomore year, then redshirting his entire junior year due to a torn ACL. Amari Cooper was selected 4th overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2015 draft. He grew in almost all of those areas as a WR in his first year, putting to bed my concerns about how he would translate to the NFL. It is highly recommended that you use the latest versions of a supported browser in order to receive an optimal viewing experience. However, I think Slayton has a very high ceiling and could be really good if he continues to develop. Hogs Haven looks at all four teams in the division in an effort to identify the best and the weakest of the NFC East. . It also highlights his ability to get open on crossing and out routes because CBs have to guard against the deeper routes so diligently. [7:19] Slayton lines up on the boundary top of screen opposite Stephon Gilmore. [1:24] Great job by McLaurin turning a simple out route into a first down with yards to spare. Hard to tell. Doug Pederson trusts Alshon more than any other WR to be his TD threat in the red zone. Here are the current preseason depth charts at wide receiver for teams in the NFC East & NFC South. The Philadelphia Eagles are ranked No. Hes matched up against Rasul Douglas 1-on-1 at the top of the screen. Still, this was overall a very positive play for Reagor. He had two years remaining on his $72 million contract. NFC East receivers chart. The Best Receiver in the division is either Amari Cooper or Terry McLaurin. It depends on whether you favor production or efficiency on who wins out. This is one of those plays that shows even when Jeffery is covered, hes open. Not only did the Giants sign Golladay to a four-year, $72 million contract this offseason, but they also used their first-round pick on Toney, the explosive rookie wideout from Florida. NOTE: The composite score for each player is based on a series of advanced receiving metrics, courtesy of Next Gen Stats. It's difficult to separate the top two receivers in 2022, but when taking into account career production and capability, Jefferson just barely gets the top spot. March 1, 2023 6:03 am SBNation TomahawkNation. The NFC East in 2020 has been described as the most atrocious division in NFL history. [7:59] McLaurin lines up opposite Jalen Mills at the top of the screen. With very little separation, Slayton runs down the sideline on a fade route, looks back, sees the ball in the air and reaches for it, but Gilmore bats it out of his hands. Terms at draftkings.com/sportsbook. At 63, 216 lbs, and running a 4.48s 40 yard dash, he checked a lot of the boxes for a WR1 in the NFL. Despite lack of deep speed, JJ was often able to make big plays like this one using fakes, quick feet, and good hands-catching ability. Well, they are often doing battle with excellent man coverage cornerbacks. Sure, there are ways to use formation and motion offensively to help receivers get away from press. One of the first things a receiver needs to do at the NFL level is to win against outstanding press man coverage. Cooper can play every WR position: X, Z, and slot, and the Cowboys use him all over the field to exploit matchups and get him paired with slower DBs. Love is draped all over JJ, trying to muscle him even having the awareness to reach out when the ball is in the air to break up the pass. [1:46] This play is one of two that is very representative of how Cooper gets open. Dallas Goedert was likened to Zach Ertz even before the draft. McLaurin releases and expertly fakes outside, causing Douglas to flip his hips outside while Terry turns back inside and easily runs past Douglas in the 1-on-1 matchup and gets open to make a big catch. I suspect the best-known group of receivers in the division is the Cowboys receiving corps, headlined by Amari Cooper and featuring the just-drafted CeeDee Lamb. Up today: Receivers 1. However, starting QB Shawn Robinson decided to transfer to Missouri after the 2018 season, leaving the Horned Frogs scrambling for a replacement. He often uses his quickness to get immediate separation once the ball is in the air, and uses his change-of-direction ability to juke an initial tackle attempt and turn uphill for extra yards. The CB flips his hips downfield and starts running with him, expecting a deep pass. Lattimore is so fast that he closes in for a tackle as soon as the ball arrives, but Cooper does a great job making the catch through contact and keeping his feet in bounds for the reception. Paul Richardson Jr was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2014 NFL draft. [5:06] The Eagles had no answer for Slayton in this game and it may point to why they prioritized adding speed to their defense in the offseason. He committed to Stanford, and although red shirted in his freshman year, became an increasingly important part of the offense after that, catching 63 passes for 1,059 yards in 2018 (top 5 in the nation). As a result, Slay does not get fooled when Cooper stops and turns around to catch the ball on a comeback. Although his deep speed is only good (not great), he has elite quickness/acceleration and change-of-direction ability. Despite this, Jeffery turns on a dime and immediately locates the ball in the air, leaping up to get the catch and first down. Many of the recent early-round busts at this position came from wide-open spread attacks that only asked the wide receivers to run a few routes and when these young receivers adjusted to the league, they were just not close to being well-rounded enough in all aspects of running an NFL route tree. The addition of Brown has helped Jalen Hurts and the Eagles' offense reach new heights, as Hurts has a league-high nine TD passes on go routes this season with Brown being responsible for an NFL-best five of them. And, sure, Reagor had a disappointing rookie season in 2020 but its way to early to write him off, especially with a new offensive scheme coming to town. The Cowboys receivers may have the most talent and productivity potential of any group in the NFC East, but, with the Cowboys run-centered offense, and Dak Prescotts limited pass production (he averages 3,625 yards and 25 TDs per season in his career), this group is unlikely to put up truly big numbers in 2019. He runs basic routes that get him where he needs to go, but show very little nuance (in terms of exploiting zones) or subtlety (in terms of using fakes and timing). Second, this is clearly a play designed to get the ball to Alshon Jeffery in the red zone. Like Jefferson in Minnesota, Hill's presence forces defenses to become more predictable and one dimensional. JJ has an extensive bag of tricks, using good fakes and foot quickness to get open at the release and good body positioning to make tough, contested catches. Again, Slayton does the basic job necessary to run his route and make a play, but doesnt employ any subtlety or counters to beat a CB as athletic as he is. However, I noted he had a few flaws in his game that I thought would cause him problems. This was a 37 yard play. Its a big change from the pre-Gettleman Giants, who, for a while, fielded one of the highest-profile receiving groups in the league. That is a difficult habit to unlearn at this point in his development, though I saw enough hands catches to think he can develop. The Hill-Waddle duo has been a handful for defenses all season long, and as a result, Miami has a chance to earn its first playoff berth since 2016. One major reason for that success has been Lambs consistency, as the third-year wideout has posted 70-plus receiving yards in five of those seven games. Jeffery is the closest thing to a WR1 on the Eagles offense. Hughes gives a generous initial cushion to prevent getting beat deep, which allows Cooper to get an easy reception for a first down and then some. Where does he land in the Next Gen Stats analytics team's ranking of the top 10 off-ball linebackers right now? It also helped the other players on offense by giving them easier matchups and complicating the Lions defense (if Slay had to travel, then other DBs had to travel or adjust their responsibility accordingly). This play highlights Coopers ability to make tough catches, as well as the awareness and body control to keep both feet in bounds for the reception. Slay is in position to easily break the pass up instead. The Next Gen Stats analytics team provides a ranking of the top 10 players at the position in 2022, with some names that could surprise you. Since joining Josh Allen and the Bills, Diggs leads the NFL with 2,953 receiving yards when aligned wide, and his 1,077 yards on hitch routes over that span are 370 more than the next-closest player (Tyler Lockett, 707). He makes the catch (though its a body catch, not a hands catch) and shows great strength and body control breaking the initial tackle to run for several more yards. He takes off and blows past his DB to get about 6 yards of separation vertically. This home run ability forces defenses to guard the deep field against Cooper and sometimes causes CBs to give up short crossing and out routes to him because they are afraid of him running deep. Often at the college level, receivers see very little in-your-face physical man coverage, so watching what we can and analyzing it very closely is extremely important. Jared Goffs comeback season has been a lot prettier when St. Brown has been on the field -- he averages +0.22 EPA on those dropbacks, a number that would only trail Patrick Mahomes in the category this season. He is a nuanced route runner, so he excels at running his routes in such a way that he has leverage over DBs and can get quick separation after his break. 1. Despite no separation in the endzone, JJ uses smart body-positioning and use of hands to maintain inside leverage and box out the CB in the endzone. It also shows how much teams have to respect his deep-threat ability and how that opens up opportunities for short passes. DAVANTE ADAMS, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS The former Green Bay Packer is at the top of his game as he makes the move to the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he also ended this play with a mistake I saw him make a few other times too by slipping and falling without contact. [0:41] This is almost a mirror of the first play shown above against the Vikings. However, he has a limited route tree and doesnt show much subtlety in terms of using fakes, counters, leverage, body-positioning, or physicality to get open. Non-Redskin fans could be forgiven if they were unfamiliar with Cam Sims, Trey Quinn, Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon, though the latter two, taken in the 3rd & 6th rounds of Aprils draft, got a lot of good press during the pre-draft buildup this year. [4:15] This is a well designed and executed pick play where Richardson springs Vernon Davis open for a huge gain. Eventually, Washington took it. Slay held Cooper to 3 catches on 8 attempts for 38 yards (a 38% catch rate). Share. Best Wide Receiver Duo (Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports) There are many potential choices for the best receiver pair in the game today. We use cookies and other tracking technologies to improve your browsing experience on our site, show personalized content and targeted ads, analyze site traffic, and understand where our audiences come from. After the snap, Richardson soon breaks inside on his route while Davis (a little behind him) breaks outside, allowing Richardson to incidentally block the DB mirroring Davis and let Davis run free up the sideline for a huge gain. Look at the difference in cushion the Eagles give him vs the other boundary WR at the top of the screen! At the bottom of the depth chart, Watkins, Hightower and J.J. Arcega-Whitesid might be in a battle. Please also read our Privacy Notice and Terms of Use, which became effective December 20, 2019. But the ball is perfectly placed where only JJ can get it, and he again reaches out and uses his long arms and sure hands to secure the ball beyond the reach of the CB for a tough TD catch. In a sport that is as physically demanding as football, one in which player injuries are common, the unit depth is as important a factor as the skill of the star players. But against NFL-caliber talent, it might not be enough. Bo Wulf of The Athletic suggested this weekend that wide receiver Quez Watkins could find himself . Dak breaks to his right (Coopers side) almost immediately after the snap despite little pressure and is looking for Cooper the whole time. Every team has at least one .
